How to Figure Out What's Blocking Your Health

If you look up “health” in the dictionary, you get stupid definitions like:
Freedom from disease or ailment
Soundness of body and mind
We’re defining health by what it’s not?
I don’t have a named disease; therefore, I am healthy?
That makes as much sense as “I don’t have a bad car; therefore, I’m a good driver.”
Furthermore, who of us is going to say “I’m not sound of body and mind?”
What does that even mean?
OVERCOMING THAT HOPELESS FEELING
With useless definitions like that, no wonder so many people flounder and get frustrated when it comes to health.
Definitions like that leave us rudderless, powerless—we have nothing to strive for.
With no way to course correct, we’re left to the mercy of treatments and interventions.
The problem is, health isn’t built by treatments and interventions.
Health is built by clarity of keystone habits, and the regular practice of those habits.
It’s not your genes that determine your health destiny.
Not even close. It’s your choices.
Our genes “load the gun,” but it’s our choices and environment that “pull the trigger.”
CREATING A USEFUL DEFINITION OF HEALTH
Or, better than a definition, how about a checklist to tell us how we’re doing?
Here is, as far as I see it now, what health is:
No chronic aches or pains.
Good vision and radiant skin.
A healthy body fat percentage.
Strong muscles and joints that work well.
No trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
Rarely catching a cold and no problems with allergies.
A good memory, clear thinking, and a strong ability to focus.
The energy for all required activities and a surplus for recreation.
Rarely wrestling with loneliness, anxiety, discouragement, or depression.
No digestive discomfort and daily, comfortable elimination (log not pile).
Freedom from unstable emotions and intense cravings for foods, drugs, alcohol, etc.
How does your health measure up to that checklist?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve got some things to work on.
