Why I Have Three Desks in My Office

One theme that came up in this week's subscriber Q&A (you can subscribe below if you're not on our mailing list) is the concept of aging well. As you can all probably tell, I have a "desk job," meaning my work is tied to a computer screen.

Given that I LOVE my work, I won't be giving up my screen time in the foreseeable future. But therein is a potential obstacle to aging as well as I know I'm capable of...

I can't spend the next few decades sitting in front of a computer for 8–10 hours a day without that taking a massive and unnecessary toll on my body. So I did my best to get proactive. I thought I'd show you my strategy to continue to "drive a desk" and age well.

THE THREE DESKS IN MY OFFICE

Sitting desk, this desk is primarily for podcasts and coaching. I invested in a nice chair that is rated for eight hours of sitting per day. My back and joints appreciate the extra money spent. I elevated my computer so it is at eye level, and therefore I'm not looking slightly downward all day. I also got an ergonomic keyboard and mouse—wrists are happier.

Standing/walking desk: This desk is for when I need a break from sitting, or for rainy days when I can't walk outside. I often use it to "walk and jam." In other words, I do my deep work while walking and listening to epic movie soundtracks. My fancy keyboard and mouse follow, and it's easy to get a three-mile walk in while I work/type.

NOTE: My treadmill shoes are "zero drop"—i.e. no raised heel. Tip: That (and the foot pad below) keep my Achilles tendons from shortening.

On that note, I learned long ago as a personal trainer that good foot/ankle mobility impacts ALL our joints. When I'm not walking, I also put this fancy foot pad on top of the treadmill for standing. The pad ensures my feet constantly experience soft pressure changes, and that helps me stimulate all 26 bones and 33 joints in each foot.

Floor desk: This desk is for helping keep my hips mobile. I know the value of movement, not just exercise, and sitting on the floor naturally means I'm constantly shifting and getting my hips into different positions. Mobility is "use it or lose it." I'm doing my best to keep what I can. This is a great desk for busy work and responding to emails.

TWO PROACTIVE MEASURES TO MITIGATE EMFs & BLUE LIGHT

After reading The Invisible Rainbow by Arthur Firstenberg in 2022, I became convinced of the potential body burden of EMFs. So, I took some proactive measures and got a harmonizer from Somavedic for my office.

I also know that excessive blue light/screen time can wear out one's eyes. I'm almost 50, still don't use glasses, and am committed to going without as long as possible. So, when I'm not on a video call, I wear sexy glasses like these.

You can get your own pair here. They have many options to choose from.

OK, your turn...what else could I level up about my office environment?

Here's to aging well,

Christian

You could call me a natural health thinker. I'm a husband and father of six. I sometimes wear funny-looking toe shoes. I wear out podcasts and audiobooks faster than people can make them. I get paid to ask thoughtful questions and love writing and speaking about a wide range of topics.
